What is the meaning of Avtaar and how many types of avtaar are there?

In Hinduism, a word Avtaar is always get to hear. But most of Hindus don't know the exact meaning of Avtaar. In Hindu Puranas and Upanishad, all about Avtaars are well described.
Meaning of Avtaar is, who come down from above is know as Avtaar and such process is called Avtaaran. In Hinduism, among 5 prime God and Goddess like Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, Lord Surya and Goddess Durga are able to take avtaar.
In all yugas, Lord Vishnu had taken avtaar for Establishment of Dharma and destruction of evils. Vishnu Avtaars are Meena (Fish), Kashyap (Tortoise), Varah (Bore), Narshingha (Half man and Half Lion), Vaman ( dwarf human), Parshuram, Ram, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki. In future incarnation or avtaar will be Kalki avatar.


Similarly, Lord Shiva has various avtaars like Ekdash Rudras and Bhairavas. There are various kind avtaar like Purna Avtaar (Complete avtaar), Avesha Avtaar (Charged avtaar), Ansha Avtaar (Part avtaar) etc. Krishna and Ram avtaar were purna avtaar (Complete avtaar) of Lord Vishnu. Parshuram avtaar is a example of Avesha avtaar (Having power for limited time duration). Lord Ved vyas is the example of Ansha Avtaar (Part avtaar).
